Kebony, Natual Wood Made to Last

Inside Kebony® from Rex Lumber: The Modified Wood That Delivers Hardwood Performance, Predictability, and Long-Term Value

Why Kebony® Wood Is Gaining Attention in Exterior Projects

Exterior wood projects demand more than appearance. Architects, millwork shops, and retailers are prioritizing performance, predictability, and long-term value for their projects and customers.

Material selection now comes down to a few critical questions. How will it perform over time? How stable is it during installation? How much risk does it introduce or eliminate?

At Rex Lumber, these are the conversations happening every day. Customers are not just evaluating materials in isolation. They’re looking for solutions that perform consistently from spec through installation, and into long-term use. That’s exactly where Kebony® has earned its place.

What Is Kebony® Wood?

Kebony wood isn’t a species. Kebony employs a patented technique developed in Norway to enhance the wood’s strength and longevity significantly.

This unique, dually modified™ process transforms fast-growing, sustainably sourced softwoods into a material with the performance characteristics of premium hardwoods.

Key benefits of Kebony wood include:

  • High durability
  • Increased hardness and strength
  • Exceptional dimensional stability
  • Resistance to rot, decay, and insects
  • Low maintenance requirements

The process itself works in two ways.

Low Maintenance Lumber including Resistance to Decay and Insects

First, the biobased liquid reacts within the wood structure, reducing its ability to absorb moisture. This active modification significantly improves durability and limits movement.

Second, that same liquid polymerizes inside the wood, reinforcing the cell structure. This passive modification increases hardness, strengthens the material, and gives Kebony its rich brown color.

Because these changes happen within the wood itself, the performance is permanent. It’s not a surface treatment.

Kebony products are backed by warranties of up to 30 years for many applications, with certain products offering up to 35 years (depending on use).

Kebony also serves as a sustainable hardwood alternative. It uses a responsibly sourced, fast-growing species, reducing reliance on tropical hardwoods while maintaining comparable performance.

Modified Wood Decking

Modified Wood vs Traditional Hardwood

Traditional hardwoods have long been used for exterior applications because of their durability. However, they often introduce variability in sourcing, density, and performance from one shipment to the next.

Modified wood products like Kebony solve that.

By engineering stability into the material, Kebony delivers:

  • Reduced expansion and contraction
  • Greater consistency across boards
  • Lower maintenance requirements over time
  • Reliable performance in demanding environments

In performance testing, Kebony demonstrates durability ratings comparable to leading hardwoods, while offering improved dimensional stability and more predictable movement. That balance is what allows it to deliver hardwood-level performance without the same level of variability.

For architects and builders, that translates into fewer installation issues, tighter tolerances, and fewer callbacks after project completion.

Modified Wood vs Composite Decking

Composite decking is often positioned as a low-maintenance alternative, but it introduces a different set of tradeoffs around heat retention, structural performance, and long-term appearance.

Modified wood products like Kebony take a different approach, enhancing real wood to improve durability while preserving its natural performance characteristics.

Compared to composite decking, Kebony offers:

  • Better dimensional stability without the “plastic” feel
  • Lower heat retention, making it more comfortable underfoot
  • Natural wood aesthetics that evolve into a consistent patina over time
  • Proven structural performance with real wood fibers, not fillers

Cladding b KebonyThese differences matter in real-world applications. Composite boards can expand, trap heat, or show wear patterns over time, while modified wood behaves more predictably across changing conditions.

For architects, millwork shops, and contractors, that translates into fewer surprises during installation and more confidence in how the material will perform over the life of the project.

Why Performance Alone Isn’t Enough

Material performance is only one part of the equation. How the material is milled, finished, and delivered has a direct impact on jobsite results.

Even high-performance materials can create challenges if they’re not properly prepared before installation.

This is where partnering with the right supplier makes all the difference.

Factory Finishing for Consistency

Finishing isn’t just about appearance. It plays a role in long-term performance and consistency.

While Kebony does not require a finish to maintain its warranty and will naturally weather to a silver-gray patina over time, factory-applied coatings can be used to help maintain  its original color and enhance long-term appearance.

At Rex Lumber, finishing is applied in a controlled environment. This ensures:

  • Even coating across all material
  • Proper adhesion to freshly milled surfaces
  • Consistent results from the first piece to the last

Rex Lumber can also apply manufacturer-recommended finishing systems, including Cutek Extreme Wood Stabilizer, designed specifically for modified wood.

It’s a penetrating oil, not a surface film, so it won’t peel. Instead, it stabilizes the wood, helping reduce splitting, warping, and cupping over time. It also performs well in both freshwater and saltwater environments, which matter for coastal and high-exposure projects. It does not provide UV protection, so the wood will still weather to a silver-gray color.

Colortone Cutek options can be applied

If maintaining color is part of the spec, Cutek can be applied with Colortone options to slow the natural greying process while keeping that same penetrating performance. Additional coats will need to be applied while in service to maintain the color.

The end result is simple. Less variability on site. More predictability in the field. And a finish that’s applied the way it should be, from the start.

Reduced Project Risk

When Kebony arrives pre-milled and pre-finished:

  • Installation time decreases
  • Labor requirements are reduced
  • On-site finishing variability is eliminated
  • Project timelines become more predictable

This is where the value becomes clear. Not just in the material itself, but in how it is delivered and installed.

Applications for Kebony® Wood

Kebony is a versatile material suited for a wide range of exterior and architectural applications:

  • Kebony decking
  • Cladding and siding
  • Docks and boardwalks
  • Site furnishings
  • Exterior millwork and custom architectural elements

Kebony Clear decking is also code-approved for use in the United States, giving architects and builders added confidence when specifying it for both residential and commercial projects.

Kebony begins with a rich brown tone and naturally weathers into a silver-gray patina over time. The rate of this change depends on exposure to sun and weather. For projects where color consistency is important, finishes can be applied to maintain the original appearance.

Its durability and resistance to moisture make it well suited for challenging climates, including coastal and high-humidity environments.
